Two Truths and a Lie about Assisted Living

Though every assisted living community is different, they all seem to be strapped with the same misconceptions. These popular myths, while untrue, tend to craft a negative general image. We have decided to put some of these popular assisted living myths to rest by playing a version of the popular game “Two truths and a lie”. Usually played as an icebreaker game to get to know others, the game has one simple objective: to identify which of three statements is untrue.

Ready to play?

Read the following three statements. Which of them is untrue?

  1. Assisted living residents are often more active than those aging at home.
  2. Residents may be less social than if they were aging at home, but only by a little.
  3. An assisted living community is not the same as a nursing home.

Which one did you identify as the lie? If you picked number 2, you’re right! Residents in assisted living communities are not less social than those aging at home, not at all! Let’s look more closely into these statements:

TRUE: Assisted living residents are often more active.

One of the most popular myths of assisted living is that it is a depressing atmosphere with little to do all day. And, unfortunately, images of overcrowded, institution like facilities may come to mind. In reality, assisted living communities of today are leaps away from their negative stigma. With amenities like spas, salons, walking paths, lavish dining halls, gyms and movie theaters, these modern communities are beautiful and resort-like. And, residents enjoy a full calendar of available activities and events. With so much to do, there is little opportunity for boredom, and most seniors report they are much more active in their assisted living facility than when they were living alone.

FALSE: Residents in assisted living are less social.

This rumor, that residents are less social and often lonely, is completely false. Residents have ample opportunity to meet new people and develop meaningful, long-lasting friendships; which they fully take advantage of! What kind of opportunities? It varies from community to community, but anything from games, cooking classes, social gatherings, exercise classes, outside excursions and more. And, residents’ social lives are certainly not limited to within the assisted living community. Transportation is often available for anyone who would like to venture out as they please, with whom they please. And, of course, family and friends are more than welcome to visit. Many facilities allow overnight visitors as well, so grandchildren are able to spend the night at their grandparents’.

TRUE: Assisted living communities and nursing homes are different.

Too often, the terms “assisted living” and “nursing homes” are used interchangeably when they are quite different, and it’s important to know how they differ.

Nursing Homes- A nursing home, more commonly called skilled nursing facility, is usually a temporary stay. Their main focus is rehabilitation after injury or illness. Patients usually require supervision and care, including physical therapy and some medical treatments.

Assisted Living- Assisted living residents are mobile, active, and independent (with assistance available when needed). and have the assurance that assistance is always available if needed.

So, sweep all of those negative images under the rug. The fact is that times have changed, and seniors living in a modern assisted living community such as ours are happy and living their lives to the very fullest! They find themselves expanding their social circle, trying new things, and being healthier.
